Stay Cool in Hot Weather

Some ideas on how to beat the summer heat.
Many people die of heat stroke each year. Follow these steps to ensure your safety during the heat.
  • Cool bath
If you are REALLY having issues, a cool bath or a swim will cool you down in a hurry. Large volumes of cool water can lower your temperature very quickly. Showers or just running through sprinklers help too. A mister is a good idea and a spray bottle filled with water is a refreshing idea.
  • Move slowly
When you exercise, you generate heat. When you move slowly, you don't. If you remain still you will stay the coolest.
  • Stay near fans or in the wind
Moving air will speed the evaporation of your sweat and keep you cooler. This is good as long as you are hydrated, so keep drinking non-alcoholic, low sugar, and non-caffeinated drinks. (See item about being hydrated.)
  • Stay in air-conditioned places
Libraries, community centers, and many other public places often have air conditioning. Basements are the coolest places in many buildings.
  • Stay hydrated

Being well hydrated means you will be able to sweat which is your body's natural defense against heat. If your urine isn't straw-colored or lighter, you probably need to drink more water. Electrolytes are important as well. Consider orange juice or sports drinks, but make sure the drink is not just sugar, or worse yet, contains caffeine or alcohol. You also want to avoid diuretics (such as coffee) which cause you to dehydrate.

Be careful that you do not drink too much, or a large quantity all at once. Consult your doctor if you have been told to restrict fluids of if you are on a low-sodium diet and are considering drinking sports drinks. Some are high in sodium and other electrolytes. Also, beware of very cold drinks which can cause stomach cramps.

  • Wear loose clothing
If your clothing is tight, it will trap perspiration against your skin. This does not allow the moisture to evaporate. It will stop the cooling mechanism that sweating provides. If your clothing is not skin-tight, then sweat will dry on you (cooling you) faster and better. Sweat that dries on your clothes cools the clothes but doesn't help you a stay cool nearly as well. Cotton is a good choice of clothing material in hot climates, but a poor choice when the weather is cool, especially when exercising.
  • Wear a hat or stay in the shade
A hat that will shade all of you will keep you cooler. A hat that is small likely will keep heat at your head.
  • Consider purchasing something like a MiraCool Miracool Summer Liner w/ Neck Shade hat, visor, or bandana
A terrific idea. They are better than a cold cloth, and don't get everything wet once the fabric has dried out some. They are filled with a crystal that absorbs water and cools you as the water evaporates.
